What about tipping over?
The open deck kayaks we use are 36” wide and are so stable that you can
stand up on one without tipping over. They are specifically made for
fishing and scuba diving, with stability as the top priority. You should
have no concerns about tipping over, whether paddling or fishing.
Some, or all, of our group doesn’t want to fish. Can we still go?
Of course. My kayak tours and kayak fishing tours are in the same area.
I’ll give you the best kayak tour you can get in Ketchikan. No large
groups, easy open deck kayaks, personal attention, and a remote setting
set this tour apart. Why kayak around your ship and chaotic downtown?
Let me show you the best spots.
Can we keep fish?
Yes you can keep your fish. Processing is available through KKF and we
will take care of the details if you decide to keep fish. However,
unless you get something grand, most folks prefer to catch and release
and just get out there and have a great time. It is expensive to process
and ship, but the option is available just the same as if you were
on a charter boat.
Alaska seems so extreme. Isn’t it just plain nuts to go fishing from
a kayak?
No. I think its nuts to book a charter boat that will only
take you trolling (you don’t actually get to ‘fish’) amongst dozens of
other trolling boats, when you could have a private and peaceful trip
instead. You'll get a far
more in depth experience than you’ll get on a power boat.
The Cruise Line encouraged booking through them to be sure the tour
is safe, and so we get back to the ship on time. Is this accurate?
The Cruise Line wants your money.
We have never had a client miss their ship. We have also never had a
single mishap or accident during a tour. If you want a cookie-cutter
tour where they won’t even know your name, then book on board your ship.
If you want a safe and exciting trip with a local guide who will call
you by your first name, then call me. For reference please call the Ketchikan
Visitor’s Bureau at 907-225-6166 or online at www.visit-ketchikan.com
I don’t have any experience with kayaking or fishing. Is this a problem?
Perfect. My specialty is picking up an unsure novice at the dock, and
returning a confident and fired up kayaker only hours later. No experience
is necessary so don’t let this one stop you.
Will we be kayaking in the ocean or fresh water?
Our trips are in salt water, but not in the open ocean. We’re fortunate
to have many islands protecting this area from the open ocean. There
may be some wind waves, but we have no surf or swell here. We are always
next to small islands and shore. Calm conditions prevail.
What kind of fishing gear do you use?
We use Shimano baitcasting reels on Seeker Inshore rods, with 15# line.
This is light tackle, hands on fishing. We bottom fish and mooch or
troll around for salmon. You don’t ever have to cast.
